Every mother faces this issue of her child not eating properly or sufficient when the little one starts on Solids. She keeps experimenting on different recipes and food to lure the kid into eating. She takes help from all her friends who had been through this phase or currently in this phase.
Well herein I would try to sum up my experience with my lil twin daughters who are currently 1.5 year old. And they have thankfully as yet not given me a very tough time making them eat. But having gathered a lot of insight from my friends on food to serve them, when to serve them , how to serve etc ..etc , this was the most common problem which I could figure out, but while I am handling my kids herein are few tips for the mother with kids in the same age bracket
Game of Quantities: Being a mother you always want to ensure that your kids eat well and very rarely we try to cook less than required. But you have to overcome the habit of cooking more than the required quantity. After all you are making it for a kid who is not even 2 year old. So my first tip is if your kid consumes ½ a bowl , then cook half a bowl only. So that if the kids eats it all you ll feel happy.
Focus on Quality : try to make every meal rich on nutritional value. Choose your recipes for the kid wisely and try to offer maximum variety and focus on food that takes care of more of the vital nutrients. Try few of my recipes here – Oatmeal for kids, Paneer Parantha for kids, corn flakes recipes etc
Reward the kid : while you try to make your little one eat, always ensure that you do something interesting with kid of his / her choice immerdiately after you have fed him / her ( off course not a physical activity ) like lay his / her Favorite game, take him to the balcony, give him / her their favourite toy, let him or her run around, make him / her speak to someone on phone, and make this a routine so the Kid is conditioned to look forward for the reward post having his meal.
Eating is a Game : Try making the process of having the meal a game, like if you are serving Oatmeal in a bowl , take a bright color bowl and change the color everyday ( so there is a weekly pattern of color of bowls ). While you make him eat spoon by spoon, ensure the kid also has a bowl and spoon same color and he/ she is serving you spoon by spoon ( you are pretending to eat while the kids is actually eating )
Let them eat themselves : at least one meal in the day you should help the kid have it by himself, like if it’s a parantha / bread , give him smaller pieces and let him / her have it on her own in the space he / she wants to have it. If its porridge / oatmeal take the bowl to the kid let him/ her have the spoon while your hand is giving direction to take the quantity from the bowl and take it to his/ her mouth ( hold the hand of the kid by the wrist ).
Play and Eat : at least one meal should be served as a hide and seek game / run run game , where you put the spoon/ food in the kids mouth while you say run run and then caught him and feed him. You would simply love the fun and giggles from your kid.
Frequent meals : try to give at least 7-8 different meals to the Kid in a day in smaller portions, you might end up feeling that you had been doing this throughout the Day but would definitely be content by the end of the day on the amount of food the kids had consumed.
Punish the Kid : if the kid spills / intentionally throws out the food don’t appreciate the act , infact punish him / her by either taking away the toy and leaving him or her alone for 5 minutes. So that gradually he / she is conditioned that you don’t liked it. Try not to smile or react to his cute acts. I know this is tough but would be rewarding
Try before giving up : while you get the food and give the kid the first bite of food, he / she might resists and would not like to have it, but just don’t give up at that point , let the kid get the feeling that he or she won and try just after 5 min. repeat this after every 5 minutes but make it fun not forcefull like aaahhhh aaaah here it comes, slurp slurp slurp please eat me,, ding dong ding dong here it comes.
Serve Variety – add variety to their food by either trying to create different shapes of food , the food should look colourful, clean one of their smaller toy and wrap the food around it. Eg wrap a Besan chilla around a soup stick, make chapatti in form of a small circle / triangle and insert a straw in it and give.
